ISKCON Temple in Mumbai’s Girgaon Receives Hoax Bomb Threat

Mumbai | July 22, 2025 — The ISKCON temple at Girgaon Chowpatty, a prominent spiritual landmark and popular tourist destination, was shaken today by a hoax bomb threat, prompting immediate security action.

The Threat and Official Response

At around 7:30 PM on July 20, the temple’s security manager, Rahul Govekar, received an anonymous email claiming “five RDX IEDs” had been planted on the premises. The email demanded unspecified action from the Tamil Nadu government and police, threatening detonation within 16 hours .

In response, Gamdevi Police, supported by the Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad (BDDS) and cybercrime units, carried out a thorough sweep of the temple. No suspicious devices were found. An FIR was registered at Girgaon police station and authorities have launched a cyber-forensic investigation .

Patterns in Hoax Threats Across India

This incident forms part of a recent wave of bomb hoax emails targeting major institutions nationwide:

  • Earlier this month, Coimbatore International Airport received a similar email warning of an imminent bomb, which was later confirmed a hoax after a full search by BDDS and CISF.
  • Nearly a week ago, the Golden Temple in Amritsar was also targeted with an RDX threat email. Authorities escalated security, deployed bomb squads, and registered a formal FIR.

These recurring threats—even though false—have triggered widespread alerts, major evacuations, and increased security protocols.

Impact on Devotees and Temple Security

While there were no disruptions to daily prayers or darshan timings, devotees were advised to enter through the main gate only and avoid gatherings during the sweep. The temple’s management praised the swift action of security teams and vowed greater vigilance moving forward.

Authorities Warn After Influx of Hoax Threats

Mumbai Police, in collaboration with cyber experts, are tracing the email’s origin. Online investigations are exploring the possibility of VPN usage or spoofed IP addresses. A Cyber Crime Cell probe is currently underway to identify the sender.

Preventive Measures Enforced

  • Increased CCTV and perimeter surveillance
  • Routine email and visitor screening
  • Staff briefings on responding to suspicious communications
  • Coordination drills with police and bomb squads

Significance and Takeaway

Although this hoax did not escalate into any real crisis, it highlights vulnerabilities in public security and the disruptive potential of digital threats. Temple authorities and law enforcement have reiterated assurances of safety but stressed the need for public vigilance and cooperation.
